Interesting that they didn't opt for a bridge. Just curious, does anyone know what the reasons were?

I would tend to think that the amount of land needed to build a bridge tall enough for large ships to pass under would have been prohibitive. The span is only a third of a mile, and far less land is needed for a tunnel, versus building a bridge with say 200' of clearance over the bay. Think of the area needed to go from sea level to 200 feet high and back down again.
