Lifting Ships in Brandenburg at Niederfinow.

The waterways of Germany has made the engineers inventive and thus they created possibilities of moving ships and barges from one river section to another by using certain technical achievements. One of these is at Niederfinow, which is currently beeing modernised.
Some of the words used to decribe this procedure are River locks, boat lifts, ship lifts (liftlocks, lift locks).

We shall try to explain this process of lifting a ship either from a lower or an upper section of a river to proceed on the other end.

History

It is pretty impressing when you are standing on the visitor’s platform watching this spectacle and enjoying the view over the surrounding region.

The lift is closed for an average of 67 days a year because of frozen rivers. During this period repairs are undertaken.

"Interesting, beautiful and impressive" are used when talking about the lift at Niederfinow.

500.000 visitors annually can't all be wrong.
