This actually appears to be an amphibious assault ship, and from what I can find its probably an Iwo Jima class. If it is an Iwo Jima class, its either the USS Tripoi or USS Inchon (which as near as I can tell are the only two left)

After digging into Wikipedia, the only carrier type ships that have that same build and deck configuration are Amphibs.

This is an older carrier however, as the Iwo Jima class ships were built durring the 50's and 60's as dedicated helicopter carriers.

If I see the number on the bow correctly, it looks like #7 Iwo Jima class, the Guadalcanal, decommissioned in Aug 31 1994.

Try viewing it in Google Earth, you can zoom in further and get a bit more detail - though it does get a bit blocky...

Looks like some sort of aircraft just to port of the white square nearly amidships.

There's lots of other vessels further North, they're in a much more dismantled state though...

If you check out Google Earth in San Diego theres 3 of these amphibs. The USS Tarawa (Tarawa Class) The USS Boxer (Wasp class) and the USS Peleliu (Tarawa Class)

I'd do a spot for them here, but there not visable on Google Maps yet.

actually, that is part of the ghost fleet.. the ships docked in the middle of the james river(i believe) are awaiting demolition. that ship in the middle of the view is the "guard" ship.. that is where the MA or MP's stand guard over the fleet, ebing how it is too ricky to actually stand guard on the ships.
